Director identity verification

[CONTENT REVIEW] Companies House identity verification confirms who you are. Your personal code links that verified identity to each company role.

This is the date the official sources were checked, not an approval date.

Who needs to do this, and who is responsible?

[CONTENT REVIEW] Directors must verify their identity. People with significant control have separate requirements and deadlines, even if they are also directors.

When is it due?

[CONTENT REVIEW] Existing directors provide their code with the company's next confirmation statement. New directors provide it on incorporation or appointment. Check each company separately and follow the official timing guidance.

What does it cost?

[CONTENT REVIEW] Verification through GOV.UK One Login is free. An authorised corporate service provider may charge.

What you need

  • [CONTENT REVIEW] Identity evidence accepted by your chosen verification route; follow its document and device requirements.
  • [CONTENT REVIEW] Your Companies House personal code after verification. This is different from the company authentication code.

How to do it

  1. [CONTENT REVIEW] Choose GOV.UK One Login or an authorised corporate service provider using the official guidance.
  2. [CONTENT REVIEW] Complete the identity checks and keep your personal code secure.
  3. [CONTENT REVIEW] Supply the code for each directorship by its deadline; check any separate PSC obligation.

What happens if it is late?

[CONTENT REVIEW] Acting as a director after your deadline without verification is an offence. A company cannot file its confirmation statement until all its directors are verified.
